  1. As we get closer to the final release of IP.Board 3.0.0 we have seen a huge increase in the number of clients converting to our software and services from other community software platforms. Of course we are always very excited to help anyone move to IP.Board and this is the best time to do the conversion. You can start getting familiar with IP.Board on the current 2.3.6 version and our staff can easily upgrade you to version 3.0.0 when it is available at no extra charge.

In addition to converting customers we have also seen an increase in IPB Standard License sales as new customers buy IPB now who are excited about the upcoming 3.0.0 release and want to get familiar with IPB now.

  2. We are pleased to announce Invision Power Board 3.0.0 Beta 1 is now available.

The first beta release of IP.Board 3.0.0 is now available for download to those with current, active licenses to IP.Board. This first beta is only available to active license holders but future betas will be available to a larger audience.

This is the first beta release so please take a moment and read this entire announcement before downloading.

[*] As this is a beta release there will be bugs and issues with the software. Please report any issues using our bug tracker. Before reporting please first quickly check to see if anyone has already reported your issue.

[*] This first beta is encoded using IonCube. Beta releases are encoded so we can better control the release and ensure any reported problems are code-related and not due to modifications. Please ensure you are familiar with how to install IonCube encoded PHP software. The final version will not be encoded.

[*] Technical support is not available for this beta software.

[*] Do not use this software on a public install. Wait for the final series for your public installs.

[*] There will be no upgrade path between beta versions.

[*] You cannot (and should not try to) upgrade from previous versions of the software.

[*] In general, only download and participate in the beta test if you are comfortable working with beta software.

    System Requirements

This beta version of IP.Board 3.0.0 requires PHP 5.2.1 or greater and MySQL 4.1.22 (5 or greater preferred) to operate. We have included the Ioncube loaders with the download for 32 bit servers. If your server is running a 64 bit operating system, you will need to visit Ioncube directly to download the loaders.

    Testing Help

For this beta release we need your help testing certain key areas of IP.Board 3.0.0. Our preview site has allowed us to test the front-end of the community pretty extensively but the AdminCP of IP.Board 3.0.0 still needs to be thoroughly tested. We thank you for your assistance in ensuring IP.Board 3.0.0 is tested.

    Known Issues

[*]The AdminCP help system is still being populated and styled. The final version will be complete and look much more integrated. It will also be hidden by default.

[*]Chat Services and Subscription Manager are not included in this beta. They will be available in future betas.

[*]The installer routine inside the AdminCP (for installing components) will not work properly in this beta. If you wish to test components (such as Calendar) be sure to install them during the main IP.Board install routine.

[*]There are areas of the AdminCP not properly styled at this point.

[*]This is not an issue but for those of you who have used IP.Board for a long time: note that conf_global.php has been moved into the admin directory.

[*]The public help files are currently blank. They will be rewritten and included in 3.0.0 before the final release.

    Discussion

Please keep all IP.Board 3.0.0 discussion on the IP.Board 3.0.0 preview site so we can maintain organization. Thanks!

    Download IP.Board 3.0.0 Beta 1

If you have an IP.Board License:

  3. We are pleased to announce IP.Board 2.3.6 is now available

This update includes all previously released updates and introduces enhanced spam prevention measures.

    • The included CAPTCHA system in IP.Board has been enhanced in an effort combat spam-bot (automated script) registrations.
    • Introduces support for reCAPTCHA

    What is reCAPTCHA?

The reCAPTCHA service is a widely-used system to minimize the impact of spam-bot registrations and form submissions all over the Internet. While no system is perfect, we believe that by implementing a system like reCAPTCHA which is constantly being updated will help to mitigate spam registrations. The reCAPTCHA service is updated remotely so updates can usually be "pushed" to your community without any intervention from you. This means that as spammers get more creative: so does your forum's ability to combat them.

The upcoming IP.Board 3.0 release already includes support for reCAPTCHA by default.

    How to use reCAPTCHA

The code needed to implement reCAPTCHA support is included in IP.Board 2.3.6 automatically. Simply check that it is enabled in your IP.Board AdminCP under the Security and Privacy section of Tools and Settings or try to register a new account to verify. All new installations of IP.Board 2.3.6 will have this setting already enabled.

IP.Board 2.3.6 has a special global key for reCAPTCHA shipped with it which enables reCAPTCHA without you having to configure IP.Board at all. You can also go to http://www.recaptcha.net and get your own keys for your own use if you do not want to use our included keys.

Note: reCAPTCHA is optional and the standard IP.Board CAPTCHA system still exists in 2.3.6 (and has been enhanced) if you prefer this system over the reCAPTCH service. You can change those options in the AdminCP under Security and Privacy in Tools and Settings.

    Downloading IP.Board 2.3.6

You can download IP.Board 2.3.6 in the IPS client area. You can also download a package which contains changed files only from 2.3.5 to 2.3.6 for easier upgrading.

Please contact our technical support staff if you need assistance. As always with new releases, responses from technical support may take slightly longer than usual as we work through the requests.

    Component Updates

We have updated our components to use the new CAPTCHA system as well. These updates are only needed if you use the guest-posting CAPTCHA functions in these components. If you do not use that capability (i.e. you do not allow guest posting) then these updates may not be required.

Again, the updates for the components are only for compatibility with the new CAPTCHA system which is only used in components with guest posting enabled. No other features or enhancements are included in these updates. It is only necessary to upgrade if you use the guest-posting CAPTCHA in the components.

Our thanks to reCAPTCHA and Ben on their support team for assisting us in releasing this update quickly with a global key. Thousands of IP.Board users thank you for your service that helps to mitigate spam headaches.

  4. We have released an update to IP.Board 2.3.x to improve the Captcha spam prevention system. IPS has received reports of boards receiving registrations by "spam bots" which register and post a high number of spam posts in the forums. These bots are automated scripts which, depending on your registration setup, can bypass the current Captcha system included in IP.Board 2.3.x series.

While annoying and troublesome, this does not present a security threat to the safety of your board's database, member information, or passwords.

Important: You must have the Advanced Captcha enabled in your Admin CP under Tools and Settings -> Security and Privacy for the system to work.

    What is Captcha?

The Captcha system is the method by which the software attempts to ensure that the request to register an account is being submitted by a human and not a software program. Many web sites and software programs present the user with random characters on a unique background which can be read, and typed, by a human but not a software program or script.

    Applying Captcha Improvement

The current download of IP.Board 2.3.5 has been updated to include the improved Captcha. If you download IP.Board 2.3.5 after the date of this announcement these updates will be included.

    Existing Installs of IP.Board 2.3.x

The updated xmlout.php attached to this announcement will work on any 2.3.x IP.Board installation. Simply download the attached PHP file and upload it to: sources/action_public/xmlout.php

    http://forums.invisionpower.com/index.php?...e=post&id=17325

    Optional Updates

Also attached to this announcement are new background images and fonts used for generating the Captcha images. Applying these new images and fonts are optional but may serve to further enhance the capabilities of the default system. Simply download captcha.zip and fonts.zip attached to this announcement and upload the background images to style_captcha/captcha_backgrounds and the fonts to style_captcha/captcha_fonts in your board install.

    http://forums.invisionpower.com/index.php?...e=post&id=17326 http://forums.invisionpower.com/index.php?...e=post&id=17327

Please contact our technical support department through the IPS client area if you have any questions or need assistance applying this update.

  5. IP.Board 2.2.x and 2.3.x Security Patch

We have released a single-file security patch which impacts IP.Board 2.2.x and 2.3.x versions. This is a critical update. Please apply the patch as soon as possible or contact our technical support via the client area if you need assistance.

    Issue

It is possible to perform a remote SQL exploit and inject SQL code in an existing IPB query.

    Patching Your Board

If you have downloaded your IP.Board after the time of this announcement, the patch is already included in your files. To patch an existing installation, simply download the attached file and overwrite: sources/action_public/xmlout.php

  9. IP.Blog 1.4.0 Beta 3

We are excited to announce that the public beta of IP.Blog 1.4.0 has been released and is available to all IP.Blog customers.

This is the first public beta release (earlier betas were released internally) so please take a moment and read this entire announcement before downloading.

    • As this is a BETA release there will be bugs and issues with the software. Please report any issues using our bug tracker. Before reporting please first quickly check to see if anyone has already reported your issue.
    • Technical support is not available for public betas.
    • Do not use this software on a public install. Wait for the final series for your public IP.Blog installation.
    • If you wish to test the upgrade please do so on a copy of your database. Do not perform an upgrade on your live data. We will not be able to assist you if the upgrade fails.
    • You will be able to upgrade from IP.Blog 1.4.0 Beta 3 to 1.4.0 final when it is available.
    • In general, only download and participate in the beta test if you are comfortable doing so.

New Features and Changes since IP.Blog 1.3

    New Default Style

IP.Blog has been overhauled with a fresh new style, one which feels more like a traditional blog. Additionally, it has been designed with themes (see below) in mind, so there is plenty of room for theme authors to experiment in their designs.

    Themes and Custom Headers

You can now install 'theme packs' and allow your users to choose which of these themes will be applied to their blog. Using themes you can completely change the look and layout of an individual blog (to see a demonstration of a theme in use, check out Rikki's blog). Users are also able to create their own unique theme, these user themes must be approved by an adminstrator before they are publically viewable by other users. The new custom header system allows you to create multiple header images for users to choose from.

    Content Block Plugin System

It's now much easier to create your own content blocks, using a new plugin system. It's now possible to define settings for a plugin that apply to individual blogs, this means that you can integrate with 3rd party widgets that require a unique username for each blog. We've also included new content blocks in this release: Twitter, MyBlogLog, Google Reader, Friends Blogs, Recent Visitors, Digg, and Last.FM.

    Social Bookmarks

A new bookmark manager allows you to define bookmark services for your blog system. These services will allow blog entries to be easily submitted to the bookmark services that you setup. There are several preconfigured services: Del.icio.us, Digg, Google, Facebook, Mixx, Reddit, and Stumbleupon.

    Media Integration

The new tag allows you to automatically convert various media types into a more useable format. FOr example, [ blogmedia ]http://www.test.com/somemp3.mp3[/ blogmedia] would be converted into a mp3 player for the specified file. You can define any media type you like in the Media Tag manager, by default we include: Flickr Image Set, GameTrailers, Google Video, MP3 Player, MySpace Video, Veoh, and YouTube.

    Other Changes:

    • Feedburner Integration
    • Akisment Integration
    • Edit Entry Date
    • Display article count for categories
    • Blog Offline Mode
    • Entry author replies in comments are now highlighted
    • Admins can select a 'Featured Entry' to be displayed on the blog listing

    Download

Existing IP.Blog customers can login to the client area to download.

If you would like to see the changes and new features, without installing the beta, you can view them on our IP.Blog installation.

Thank you for being a part of the beta process, we hope you enjoy this new version!

  13. IP.Board 2.3.4 Security Enhancements and DST Bug Fix

We are releasing a minor security update to address issues recently reported regarding areas of IP.Board 2.3.4. These security issues are rather low priority and the impact is minimal due to other security features in the software. We would like to thank the users and administrators of criticalsecurity.net for their help in identifying the issues and testing the patches.

    Issue

Nesting custom bbcode in an improper fashion can result in the final HTML result of the bbcode being broken, and subsequently unwanted HTML injected into the tag. If used in specific fashions, a person could inject javascript event handlers into the final result. Additionally, we have added an "allowscriptaccess" parameter to flash movies parsed in IPB to prevent flash movies and avatars from having javascript access. These issues are mitigated due to the use of httpOnly cookies in IP.Board which limits the direct impact.

Additionally, we have patched a recent bug with the automated DST checking in IPB that has surfaced since the recent DST changeover.

    Patching Your IP.Board

The IP.Board 2.3.4 download in the client area has already been updated with the required changes. If you download IP.Board after the date of this announcement your installation will be up to date.

    Changed Files

Download the zip file below which includes only the changed files for this update. Simply upload and overwrite the old files.

We are releasing a minor security update to address issues recently reported regarding areas of IP.Board 2.3.4. These security issues are rather low priority and the impact is minimal due to other security features in the software.

    Issue

Due to Internet Explorer's overly zealous and often ambitious parsing engine, specifically crafted BBCodes can contain javascript. This issue is mitigated due to the use of httpOnly cookies which makes this more of a nuisance than a genuine threat.

  20. Invision Power Services, Inc. has relaunched its IPS Beyond service as IPS Resources

The support forums have been moved to the IPS company forums under a special category. Current customers can login with their client area email and password and the system will recognize you as a customer and assign permissions based on your purchases. If you had an old forum account with a different email address and would like the old and new account merged please submit a ticket and we will be happy to assist you.

All the great content that was on IPS Beyond including skins, mods, graphics, language packs, and more has been moved to our new IPS Resources site. Please take some time to look around and tell us what you think. We encourage you to contribute your resources for other customers to benefit from.

Over the next several weeks we will be introducing more services via IPS Resources. We are still working out the details and will certainly be looking for customer input. Some ideas include a resource-author area to give those who consistently contribute their own section of the site to demo new work and offer support. We will also be working on a marketplace functionality to allow those who wish to charge for their custom work that option. And any great ideas you come up with we will certainly look into adding!
